Do it slow and do it right, he was told,<\/p>\n

made him keep a rolled newspaper<\/p>\n

under his arm to steady him as he tapped,<\/p>\n

sent him for stout to keep the dust down.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No apprentice now: carpentry is dry work,<\/p>\n

stonecutting’s wet and out in all weathers.<\/p>\n

Inside, he’s all day standing,<\/p>\n

puts down matting for the cold coming up.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He scratches a line in the raw slab:<\/p>\n

Valentia slate, every bit as good as marble,<\/p>\n

angled like the headstones<\/p>\n

he adds names to in the graveyard.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He likes a mallet carved from apple root,<\/p>\n

turns it a tenth of an inch as he taps,<\/p>\n

uses round-headed chisels to stop the wear,<\/p>\n

guides the blade like part of his hand.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He cuts in a V to the centre of the letter,<\/p>\n

so the shadow can show up the words,<\/p>\n

gaining depth as he goes.<\/p>\n
