I don&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">I am standing in my grandmother&#8217;s kitchen; Osu in the harmattan.<br \/>\nShe&#8217;s pulling pots out of cupboards;<br \/>\nshe wants me to help her cook the evening meal.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t cook.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t tell her this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Her back is towards me; and she is singing her mother tongue,<br \/>\nthis language I don&#8217;t understand. The words jump from her lips and<br \/>\nscatter across the room like children dancing kpanlogo.<br \/>\nThis language of unwavering pride.<br \/>\nSharp as com wine. Sweet as rice water.<br \/>\nForceful as a river cascading through the gutter;<br \/>\nsmooth as powdered maize.<br \/>\nSomehow both boisterous and melodic.<br \/>\nThen she turns to look at me,<br \/>\nexpectantly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Mi nuu shi shi, I tell her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">So, I watch her gestures instead<br \/>\nand take my lessons from what I see:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">the diction of deference<br \/>\nfrom the way she calls me with a casual sweep of her hand<br \/>\nand knows that I will follow;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">the articulation of strength<br \/>\nas she cracks into the fishbone with her bare, wrinkled fingers;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">the vernacular of courage as<br \/>\nshe tosses the flesh to the sizzling oil without fear of the fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">And, somehow both slowly and all at once,<br \/>\nas we move around one another and the spices circle the air<br \/>\nour silent symbiosis produces a kind of sustenance:<br \/>\nthe meal we&#8217;ve prepared;<br \/>\n<span class=\"s1\">(komi, <\/span>fried fish, avocado pear, shito on the side)<br \/>\nthese steaming plates to satisfy us both.\u00b7<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Now my e<span class=\"s2\">yes <\/span>are prickling with tears because<br \/>\nI think that what has happened is precious and beautiful.<br \/>\nBut I can tell it to no one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">How can I make poetry out of a language I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\n<p><em>&#8216;Ga Lessons in Grandma&#8217;s Kitchen&#8217; won\u00a0Third\u00a0Prize in the 2019 Newcastle Poetry Competition.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ga Lessons in Grandma&#8217;s Kitchen The only Ga I know is brief and functional: Mi nuu shi shi.
