\nthan this Red Truck beer – cheapest
\nin the liquor store – and a sunset
\nlacking sun. You who are kind,
\nyou who give all that is left
\nto those who only have hurts.
\nOn my way here I heard
\na woman on Granville Street say
\nthere have been so many disasters
\nthey’ve all blurred into one
\nand do you have any change, any heart?
\nWe are putting the day to bed, to beer
\nbut you long for gasoline
\nand brackish tides: timestamp of good days
\nyou have to believe will <\/span>come again
\nbut on every bus I take in this city
\nsomeone is dying. Someone is dying
\nI tell the blue heron that swings by
\nswimming-capped and lanky with purpose.
\nYesterday I saw my first whale
\nand it was everything \/ no big deal.
\nI am out of time here, out of life
\nand ready to walk into the sea
\nso you tell me about the commune
\nof divorced Mormons and their basement
\nfor pleasuring strangers (always gloved).
\nWhen they’re not painting the houses
\nof British Columbia’s wealthy, the Mormons
\nlisten to nineties radio, take ketamine.
\nWe have another beer, then one more for luck,
\nand I mistake a seaplane for an eagle.
\nIt’s like this, you say:
\nthe choices we make are the choices we make.
\nSome streets in this city, it’s the end of the world.
\nOthers, it’s everyone’s best days.
\nWe leave our empties in the sand for those
\nwho have less and that’s all the souls in all the cities now –
\nnine cents for a can, twelve for a bottle.<\/p>\n
