Peacocke&#8217;s poem &#8216;Flies&#8217; has\u00a0been Highly Commended in the 2020 <a title=\"Content related to Newcastle Poetry Competition\" href=\"http:\/\/archive.nclacommunity.org\/content\/?tag=newcastle-poetry-competition\">Newcastle Poetry Competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a rusted yellow rose tapping at the pane.<\/p>\n<p>In here a bluebottle keeps veering and droning,<\/p>\n<p>wanting the air to open.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m old, I\u2019m like Roman glass,<\/p>\n<p>no more use, carefully kept, fragile and cloudy.<\/p>\n<p>Everything about me is a long time ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There was a kitchen where I used to play. I watched<\/p>\n<p>houseflies riding an invisible carousel.<\/p>\n<p>They were happy as they were,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>sipping the smells. Let me out<\/p>\n<p>to the ragged world, freed from sweepers and sprayers<\/p>\n<p>who come in early for those of us on our backs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>M.R. Peacocke has written poems since she was 4 and has been publishing since her 50s. Now at 90, she\u2019s discovering how her writing really wants to go. She has lived several lives: nurturing family, teaching, enjoying music and has 25 years\u2019 experience as a smallholder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M.R.
