{"id":432,"date":"2012-02-23T17:00:53","date_gmt":"2012-02-23T16:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archive.nclacommunity.org\/content\/?p=432"},"modified":"2012-07-30T16:02:40","modified_gmt":"2012-07-30T15:02:40","slug":"lizzie-siddal-in-the-bath-by-emma-harding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/archive.nclacommunity.org\/content\/?p=432","title":{"rendered":"Lizzie Siddal in the Bath <h6> by Emma Harding<\/h6>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lizzie Siddal in the Bath<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My fourth drowning this week.<br \/>\nFor the first hour I float,<br \/>\nremoved to a muffled world,<br \/>\nwhite tin beneath my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>My thoughts purl from scene<br \/>\nto scene, settle at Charlotte St<br \/>\nand a long winter evening<br \/>\nreading Shakespeare, how<\/p>\n<p>when they handed out parts<br \/>\nand gave me Ophelia<br \/>\nI thought What a pretty name,<br \/>\nnot knowing more than that.<\/p>\n<p>A sitting of ghosts and family &#8211;<br \/>\nChristina a grave-eyed queen,<br \/>\nWilliam both spirit and king,<br \/>\nDante sweating as the Prince.<\/p>\n<p>But wine helped me forget<br \/>\nmy lack of learning; I heard<br \/>\nher music on my tongue \u2013<br \/>\nthe mad can say the most.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Millais \u2013 call me Johnnie &#8211;<br \/>\nis always thoughtful, placed<br \/>\noil lamps beneath the bath<br \/>\n(snuffed by a sudden gust).<\/p>\n<p>I smelt their cooling wicks<br \/>\nbut Mr Millais painted on<br \/>\nand I could not raise myself,<br \/>\nsomehow, to ripple the silence.<\/p>\n<p>An hour, maybe two, passes.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve had too much of water,<br \/>\nbut the white of the ceiling<br \/>\npilots me towards sleep.<\/p>\n<p>But my dear, you\u2019re freezing!<br \/>\nA hand pulls me up and out,<br \/>\npond-heavy, water sluicing<br \/>\nfrom my antique lace.<\/p>\n<p>Dripping before his canvas,<br \/>\nI sneeze to see the girl<br \/>\nwho\u2019s me and not me,<br \/>\ndelivered, dead in the water.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.nclacommunity.org\/content\/?tag=emma-harding\">Emma Harding<\/a> was the winner in the <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.nclacommunity.org\/content\/?tag=water-competition-main-category\">main category<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.nclacommunity.org\/content\/?tag=water-poetry-competition\">NCLA&#8217;s Water Poetry Competition 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The NCLA Water Poetry Competition was judged by <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.nclacommunity.org\/content\/?tag=w.n.-herbert\">W.N. Herbert <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.nclacommunity.org\/content\/?tag=john-burnside\">John Burnside<\/a>.
