Review of Malorie Blackman event

by Amy Ludman

I thought that Malorie Blackman’s talk was excellent. She gave ideas to the audience and secrets from the book ‘noughts and crosses’. She talked about this book, explaining the ideas behind it, of racism, and how her personal experiences came through in this book. She explained about how she had deliberately reversed discrimination from black people to white people, and this interesting reverse made you want to know more about the book, the depth behind it, that only Malorie Blackman could talk about. She talked a lot about racism and how this aspect was captured in the book, the story of Sephy and Callum, and their love despite the racism that threatened them. She talked about how she had developed the characters, and how Callum had been based on herself, and how she had come about making their individual personalities. She gave advice about writing, and how you should write from the heart, and this particular topic in ‘noughts and crosses’ being one she knew and had experience of. She also talked about her personal experiences, how these shone through in this book; some of the tales were sad and some funny. Overall, I really enjoyed it and thought Malorie Blackman is an inspiration to all people who write or pursue literature, and she is a role model to all.
